Having breasts that are too large can affect your self image. But it can also lead to physical pain and interfere with leading an active life.

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty removes excess fat, glandular tissue and skin to create a more proportionate breast size and eliminate discomfort.

Reduction mammoplasty can greatly decrease back and neck pain and increase activity levels, along with helping you have an overall feeling of returning to normal proportions. The procedure can be done on one or both breasts and because it is considered reconstructive surgery, it is often covered by insurance.

How it Works
Where your surgery takes place depends upon whether or not insurance will be covering the cost. Most insurance reimbursed cases are performed in the hospital setting, while cosmetic procedures are usually performed at The Carney Center. The surgical techniques will vary depending on the amount of excess breast tissue and skin present.

After Treatment
Keep activity levels to a minimum on the day following surgery. Normal exercise levels can resume as early as a week later and gradually increase over a six-week period. Most patients describe their postoperative pain as simple discomfort, controllable with oral pain medications. You may expect to return to work approximately two days after surgery.

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right for You?
Most women who consider reduction have large, pendulous and sagging breasts disproportionate to their body. They may experience many physical problems including back and neck pain, grooving of the shoulders by bra straps and skin irritation under the breasts. Most of all, patients complain that large breasts impede their physical activity, making it difficult to exercise, participate in sports and find proper fitting clothing. Teenage girls who have a genetic pre-disposition to large breasts can often feel extremely self-conscious and develop low self-esteem.
