Gynocomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for woman-like breasts. Though this condition is rarely talked about, it is actually quite common and affects 40-60% of men. Gynocomastia can affect one breast or both and though certain drugs and medical problems may be the culprit, in the vast majority of cases, there is no known cause.
Surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on men of any age who are healthy, emotionally stable and who have firm elastic skin that will reshape to the bodys new contours. For men who feel self conscious about their appearance, breast reduction surgery can help.
How it Works
Most gynecomastia is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation, and usually takes about an hour and a half. The type of procedure used will depend on the degree of breast enlargement.
Options include removal of the tissue under the breast, or liposuction of the chest wall. In both instances, a small elliptical incision is made on the lower half of the nipple area (areola). For those men with tissue that is more glandular in nature, all breast tissue directly under the nipple is removed.
If the tissue is more fatty in nature, liposuction can provide excellent results. In some people, ultrasonic assisted liposuction is an excellent approach.
After Treatment
Youll be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment for a week or two after surgery in order to help reduce swelling. Any discomfort can be alleviated with pain medication. Stitches are removed or dissolve about a week or two following the procedure. Final results are achieved in about three months.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Right for You?
Obese or overweight men who have not first attempted to correct the problem with diet and exercise are discouraged from this procedure. In addition, heavy users of alcohol, marijuana or anabolic steroids, which may cause gynecomastia are not good candidates.
