Liposuction

Genetics play a big role in determining where fat collects on the body. Fair or not, on some people there are areas of the body that simply do not respond to diet and exercise.
Liposuction, also known as suction-assisted lipectomy, fat suction, or lipoplasty, is a body contouring technique which removes localized fat deposits and reshapes specific areas of the body. Liposuction can be performed on the face, neck, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, legs and ankles.
Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction
A newer form of liposuction, Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL), is an increasingly popular method, which helps patients recover quicker and with less bruising and discomfort than the traditional technique. UAL uses high-frequency sound waves to liquefy fat before it is removed with low-pressure suction. Dr. Carney performs UAL because it also provides an airbrush effect, creating a smoother look to the treatment area.

How it Works
Liposuction is done through small incisions located to allow for best approach to all areas. The Carney Center uses the tumescent liposuction technique, which requires minimal incisions and results in less bruising and a quicker recovery time. These incisions are very small, inconspicuous and closed with one stitch. Other procedures may be combined with liposuction, such as lower tummy tuck or medial thigh tuck, in order to eliminate some of the unwanted excess skin.
Liposuction may be done under local anesthesia, but most patients prefer general anesthesia, particularly if they are having more than one surgical procedure. A local anesthetic will leave you awake but relaxed throughout the procedure, with minimal discomfort. If you choose a general anesthetic you will sleep through surgery.
After Treatment
Most patients are alert and comfortable enough to go home after liposuction surgery. You will need to wear a snug garment to support the surgical area. The garment can be removed 24 hours after surgery but will be worn almost continuously for three to six weeks. Plan to return to The Carney Center between two and four days after surgery for a brief recheck and suture removal.
Most patients are up and moving around the following day with recovery quite rapid over the first week. Some patients return to work within two to three days. You may resume near normal activity levels in approximately one week, however, the extent of your surgery and personal considerations will factor into how quickly you recover. Any exercise or strenuous activities can be done at your own comfort level, but this may be delayed from two to four weeks following the procedure.
Is Liposuction Right for You?
The best candidates for liposuction are healthy non-smokers within 30% of their ideal weight, but with pockets of excess fat that appear disproportionately large in an otherwise balanced figure. Its important to be physically and psychologically healthy and have firm and elastic skin, which results in a better final contour. Hanging skin that won't reshape to your body's new contours may require an additional procedure to remove the excess skin.
